Ill Manors: Broadcast platform concluded

DVD extras

1) What does this tell us about Plan B's intentions in making the film?
Plan B's intention of this film was to present to mainstream people the impacts on living at a dangerous location where people earn a harsh living and the corruption that happens between many people. He wanted to expose the chav lifestyle. Also he wanted to reinforce his beliefs in the representation of these people especially the youth.

2) What do we learn about the production process for Ill Manors?

I learned that the production was very difficult to film as the production team were literally stepping into harsh parts of London where bad things tend to happen. This is because Plan B wanted to portray his vision directly with the viewer and the only way was to actual go on real location. Furthermore, the film budget was quite low as Plan B was not a trusted film director and a ''first-timer' therefore the only funding was from Microwave London (£80,000) which is incredibly low for a feature length film.

3) What can you tell about the possible target audience from this short documentary?

The target audience is aimed at young kids who may be facing similar problems in their lives as in the story but more importantly the film is aimed at outsiders and those who live a wealthy lifestyle that may not even know that these type of people even exist. I believe Plan B's intention was to try and change people's opinion of youngsters as they're stereotyped so much in the media.

4) Does the film successfully do what director Ben Drew (Plan B) set out to

achieve? Explain your answer with reference to both the film and the 'making of' documentary.
Due to its high success, iLL Manors has reached out to audiences worldwide making its message clear and getting its points across. However many critics have criticised the fact that the film focused too much on the negative side of the story and therefore negatively reinforced Ben Drew's points and made them less valid but the music playing in the film definitely creates a juxtaposition between the meaning and what is happening on screen.

Broadcast/online

1) What is SBTV? Research the channel and explain how it became successful.
Identify the target audience for this interview (demographics/psychographics) and say why.

SBTV is a platform and YouTube channel that gives young talented and unknown artists a way to project their voice into an established viewer ship. It is a great way for people without music contracts to have their say in the industry. SBTV is owned by Jamal Edwards. He began making handheld videos and later established himself with TV stations such as Channel 4. The demographics of this channel are mainly aimed at ages of 15-25 in my own opinion.

2) What is the audience appeal for an interview like this? How does the opening of the clip emphasise this appeal?

SBTV targets a younger audience demographic as the music published on the channel is primarily Hip hop and rap genre which many young people seem to listen to. I believe the black culture falls is in the psychographic of this audience as from a general look, many artists that are featured are black.

3) How is Plan B (the brand) represented in this text?

In the interview, Plan B comes across as very dominant about the production process of iLL Manors and talks about his lack of sleep and his commitment to the film. He presents a draft cut of the beginning of the film and talks about how he schedules rehearsals and things that occur on set.

Television

1) What is the history of the Jonathan Ross show? What channels has it appeared on? Why has Jonathan Ross been a controversial media figure in the past?
The Jonathan Ross Show first aired on the channel ITV in 2011 on Saturday evenings. Jonathan Ross Show has been on many TV channels such as, ITV BBC One, ABC1 (Australia) , TV One (New Zealand) and SVT1 (Sweden). There has been many controversies over the years with Jonathan Ross, one of which was the leakage of his fees. There was a leek in the amount of money that Jonathan Ross receives per show which was £10,000.

2) Identify the target audience for this interview (demographics/psychographics) and say why.

This interview with Ben Drew (aka Plan B) is seen to attract a wide audience. This interview is about Plan B's intentions for the youth in the future and his struggle to helping the youth. This subject that Plan B is talking about can grip many people including the adults. I believe that the interview is targeted to the ages of 16 to 40 age demographic. The ages up to 40 is the ages of parents or elderly who have a certain view of the youth.

3) What is the audience appeal for a programme like the Jonathan Ross show?

The target audience for this interview would mainly be the older age group. Jonathan Ross Show often talks about many things which are age restricted. The live audience is strictly 18+ however the viewership is very mixed as many subjects are widely relate-able.

Radio

1) How popular is BBC Radio 1? Find average listening figures for the station. How has the BBC Radio 1 audience declined over recent years? Why might this have happened?

2) Who is the target audience for BBC Radio 1?

BBC Radio 1's target audience is adults and mainstreamers. According to BBC News, the radio station receives an estimation of 10.44 million listeners a week.  "In total, 48 million UK adults - or 89% of the adult population - tuned in to the radio every week between April and June, Rajar said."

3) How does Plan B promote Ill Manors in this interview?

Plan B discusses his struggle when filming Ill Manors in rural areas and  the problems with financial problems that Ill Manors had. He has spent a long time working on the visuals of the film as well as well as being responsible for 90% of the music in the film. He goes on to talk about his future as a director which promotes his goals for the future to his fans.

4) What representation of Plan B can we find in this interview?

The representation that we see is that Ben Drew is passionate about helping kids who grow up in difficult neighbourhoods and are not loved. His representation shows his passion and interest in the London riots and why the government should fix it.
