Ill Manors Broadcast: TEDx Lecture

Summary of lecture:
  • Plan B kicked out of school in Year 10.
  • Grew up in a harsh environment.
  • Found out that Hip Hop music had a connection around chavs.
  • Wanted to communicate his own message.
  • Made an album to connected with kids.
  • Good things can happen to misjudged people. (Top Boy example)
  • Thought that newspapers stereotyped chavs and that his story was told untruthfully.
  • Wants funding or a way to help more kids.
3) What are Plan B's beliefs/politics? What are his values/ideologies?
Plan B wants people who grew up in harsh backgrounds and families to all be given a voice and a chance at their life instead of being rejected by society and media outlets. He also believes that people shouldn't be labelled with the old fashioned word 'chav' as this only applies as people who participate in riots do so because they do not know how to be accepted in to the modern world. From his video screening it is shown that his respect for political figures is not strong as they are often shamed upon in his song lyrics. One of his ideologies is that young people are

4) Who is the target audience of the TEDx lecture? Demographics? Psychographics? How do you know? How does this compare to the audience for his music/films?
The target audience for this TEDx lecture is for middle class people and mostly educated people from media and research outlets who want to learn about Plan B's journey and his new film iLL Manors. This talk was aimed to educate people about the problems faced in communities where troubled kids are seen. I'd say the demographic for this talk is aimed at people aged between 30-65.
This in contrast to the demographic of the actual music video is very different because the video aims at kids and teenagers around 13-19 therefore the audience is very different. However both have the intention to educate people about what is happening but the music video appeals to the younger audience more and tends to use violence.

5) What does Plan B say about the media? Explain how this can be linked to Cohen's media theory of moral panics?

The media has a massive impact on the way people's perception is on young people that are said to be chavs. They often manipulate their readers and focus on the negative sides of what those communities do. An example of this is the London riots where these people were immediately focused upon by newspapers and news reports nationwide which links to Cohen's media theory of moral panics as his theory states the way in which people react after a certain situation is presented and in this case it was about the way politicians reacted and how mainstreamers felt about what happened.
